Email on the move…Nokia E71 now (finally) working!

I’ve just upgraded my work phone to a Nokia E71 – I’m a huge fan of the iPhone – but this is only available on O2 (so personal mobile upgrade due in August – can’t wait!) and our company contract is with Vodafone.

So you may ask why not go for a “Blackberry” – personally I’m not a huge fan of these – the BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) is poor, to get the most out of them you really need a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) – and this transforms them into a really sharp business tool – but comes at a price and requires its own separate physical or virtual (better option) server (do not bolt this onto your Exchange server!!)

The E71 is a good phone – it comes with “Mail for Exchange” – which is easy (ish!) to configure by following the Nokia Mail for Exchange (MfE) Guide – what it doesn’t tell you is you have one opportunity of getting this right, otherwise if you come out of the settings you can’t get back into them and you have to factory default the phone via plugging it into your Laptop / PC and reloading the firmware and software – or as I found out on a forum later, type in *#7370# followed by the factory security code 12345 – and start again.

If you are thinking of buying an E71 – please do, only do configure your MfE first, when it asks for your Exchange Server (Exchange 2003 SP1 and Exchange 2007 SP1 required) make sure you type in your Public-Facing Mail Domain (e.g. mail.yourdomain.com) get this working and then add all your contacts and features!

If you are thinking of mobilising your business – please get in touch and see how I can help you.

  • Hmmm… Do I want you to help me mobilise mine… Probably not, I’m going for the HTC Touch Pro 2 I think when it’s released on Orange.

I’ve got the iPod Touch and am still not grabbed by the prospect of an iPhone, the lack of real keyboard is a major issue for me.

  • Anything that doesn’t use Exchange is relatively easy to mobilise – even then its more easy now than ever before (thanks to some new MS patches – thanks!)

The HTC is a nice phone – looks to rival the Nokia N97 in many ways – lets hope that the WM is stable – should be, as the new Server 2008 platform which drips into their other products (Windows 7) is excellent!

The new (OK – an additional cost extra for on the iPod Touch) landscape keyboard on the Apples looks good – their ‘touch’ technology is certainly better than the Blackberry’s (more specifically the Blackberry Storm – clumpy and horrible to use – well I find it is anyway).

Ever thought of a Bluetooth keyboard….

  • Something else to carry around in my opinion… I had one for an old iPaq that used IR (still got it somewhere!). Not really what I want, I love my HTC Touch Pro and have comfortably gone away without a laptop a couple of times, that’s how much I trust it!!!

  • How can I get my E71’s firmware version? I want to know if i need to update it. Thank you

  • Hi Jerry,

Thanks for dropping by and posting – the easiest way on an E71 to find your current firmware is by typing *#0000# into your keypad.

You can also download the Nokia suite and software upgrade tool, connect to your phone via USB (for software & firmware I would stay away from any wireless communications such as Bluetooth) and re-load the firmware and software on that way.

I believe the current level of firmware is 200.21.118 (27-11-2008 RM-346) – I updated mine only a couple of days ago, very simple (automated) to do – please ensure you backup your current phone configuration first (yes, boring and time consuming I know – worth it if it all goes wrong!).

    Cheers,
    Darren
